Mokele-mbembe

Origin and tradition

Mokele-mbembe is associated with accounts of an elusive large being in the Congo Basin. Twentieth-century expeditions popularized a dinosaur-like interpretation. That interpretation is a cryptozoological claim, rather than evidence of a surviving dinosaur or a single account shared by all communities of the region.

A heavy, long-necked quadruped with a small horn or tusk stands in river vegetation. The plate uses the familiar modern dinosaur-like reconstruction; early descriptions vary, and the illustration is not evidence of a surviving dinosaur.
